Stains, rain marks, flattened nap? Practical steps to clean suede/nubuck and lift the nap again—without discoloration.

Refresh suede & nubuck without discoloration

Why suede & nubuck mark so fast in Belgian weather

Suede and nubuck look amazing, but they’re sensitive to everyday Belgian conditions: drizzle, sudden showers, damp pavements and fine city dust. That’s why you often see stains, rain rings, flattened nap (shiny patches) and colours that look “duller”. The good news: with the right routine you can refresh suede & nubuck without discoloration and lift the fibres back to that soft, velvety finish.

As the in-house team at Vasco Shoes, we share the same practical advice in-store every week in Brussels—here it is in a clear step-by-step guide.

Before you start: 3 rules to avoid discoloration

  • Stay dry-first whenever possible. Water is a common cause of rings.
  • Always test on a hidden area before using any product.
  • Avoid DIY hacks (vinegar, soap, wipes): they can set stains or shift the colour.

If your shoes are soaked, let them dry naturally at room temperature, away from heaters. Stuff with paper to keep the shape. Only then move on to cleaning.

The minimal kit (simple and realistic)

You don’t need a cupboard full of products. For most suede/nubuck care, this trio is enough:

  • A suede/nubuck brush
  • A nubuck eraser for local marks
  • A dedicated cleaner for ingrained dirt

You can find these essentials in our nubuck rubber, nubuck-suede brush and cleaner sections.

Step 1: remove dust & lift the nap (the biggest impact)

Many pairs look dull simply because the fibres are flattened and dusty. Start with dry brushing:

  • Brush gently with the nap to remove surface dust.
  • Then brush against the nap (lightly) to lift fibres.
  • Finish shiny areas with small circular motions.

Local tip: after a day of drizzle, let the pair dry overnight and brush the next day. It prevents marks from settling in.

Step 2: remove stains without creating rings

Dry stains (dust, dried mud, scuffs)

Let mud dry completely. Then:

  • Brush off the loose dirt first.
  • Use a nubuck eraser on the mark with short, gentle passes, then brush again.

This works well on suede sneakers, ankle boots, and even on a handbag with a velvety finish.

Rain marks (rings)

Rings usually come from uneven drying. To avoid discoloration, you want to even things out rather than soak the material:

  • Start with dry brushing.
  • If the ring remains, use a suitable cleaner sparingly and work gradually.
  • Let dry naturally, then brush to lift the nap again.

If the mark is large, treat the whole panel (for example the entire toe area) instead of one small spot—this gives a more even colour.

Grease stains (the tricky one)

Grease darkens and sticks the fibres down. Don’t use water. Gently blot if it’s fresh, then visit us in-store for the safest option for your colour and stain type. Realistically, grease can often be reduced a lot, but not always removed 100%.

Step 3: lift fibres and remove “shiny” areas

A shiny patch is often flattened nap from friction, not a stain. To restore the velvety look:

  • Dry brush with a suede/nubuck brush, alternating with and against the nap.
  • For stubborn shine: use the eraser first, then brush again.
  • Finish with a light overall brush to blend everything.

On men’s ankle boots or boots, the difference can be immediate.

Protection: essential before the next shower

Once the pair is clean and fully dry, protect it—this is the biggest life-extender in Belgium.

  • Apply a waterproof spray in thin layers.
  • Let dry, then brush lightly to keep the nap soft.
  • Reapply regularly in autumn/winter or if you wear the pair several times a week.

Tip: do it the evening before, not right before you head out.

How often should you care for suede/nubuck?

  • Every 2–3 wears: quick dry brush.
  • After rain: natural dry + brush the next day.
  • When you see a mark: eraser locally + brush.
  • Once per season: deeper clean + protection.

Common mistakes (and what to do instead)

  • Scrubbing with a wet sponge: often creates rings and colour shifts.
  • Drying near a heater: can harden the material and alter colour.
  • Using smooth-leather cream: flattens fibres and darkens suede.
  • Over-working one small spot: you create a “cleaning patch”.
